The Washington Redskins and New York Giants, two
recent Super Bowl winners who have fallen on hard times, will
reprise last year's Monday night opener this season, while Houston
and Minnesota will close the season with a rare Christmas night
game.
The NFL schedule, released Friday, opens with a weekend that
includes AFC champion Cincinnati at Chicago; Super Bowl champion
San Francisco at Indianapolis, and Dallas, in its first game ever
without Tom Landry in charge at New Orleans.
It ends with the Giants-Redskins game at RFK Stadium in their
second straight Monday night opener _ New York won 27-20 at the
Meadowlands last year, the first blow in the Redskins' fall from an
NFL title to a 7-9 record.
The second week's featured game is on Sunday when Indianapolis
travels to Anaheim to meet the Los Angeles Rams in Eric Dickerson's
first game against his old team since he was traded two years ago.
On Oct. 2, a Monday night, Philadelphia will be at Chicago in a
replay of the Bears' victory last season in a playoff game in which
the second half was played in a dense fog.
The end of the season will be played around Christmas weekend
with a Saturday night game between Houston and Cleveland to be
carried by ESPN instead of the traditional Sunday night closer _
the NFL wants to avoid a game on the night of Christmas eve.
But there will be a game on Christmas night _ Cincinnati at
Minnesota.
Twenty-one of the league's 28 teams will be on prime-time
television _ all but Tampa Bay, Detroit, Green Bay, Kansas City,
Pittsburgh, Phoenix and Atlanta. Twelve teams will be on three
times, with the 49ers, Bengals, Giants and Bills making all three
of their appearances ABC's Monday night games.
